After midnight on the 27th seems as good a time as any

For my picture commemorating Pokemon’s 20th anniversary, I decided to draw all the protagonists I’ve had the pleasure of playing as and writing about these last couple of decades. These girls have gotten me through some tough times and taken me on adventures beyond my wildest dreams. We’ve shared battles, filled Pokedexes, traveled the globe, solved mysteries, saved the world, and even fallen in love–or not; sometimes there were more important things than that. In sharing their stories, I feel like I’ve grown little by little into someone a little stronger, a little kinder, a little braver than before.

My Pokemon journey started with a trainer named Lugia, and tonight it starts again at the same place.

Thanks for the memories Pokemon, and let’s have another 20 years of adventure together!

  • Looks like Jack is back

    raidennnnn

I’ve been playing Metal Gear Rising lately. It’s pretty goofy (and also… a little more violent than I’m used to…). But, I’m still having a lot of fun with it.

One scene stuck out to me in particular, so I decided to try drawing it… but then I ended up going way farther with it than I’d intended. I learned a lot about drawing robots and conveying lighting on different materials, though. I’d like to do more studies like this in the future.

In October I went to Japan for two weeks, and I didn’t draw very much while I was there. I’d sketched this before I went, and only got around to coloring it after I got back.

I tried something new for the water, and I like the result.

  • dmmd: happy birthday mink

    hbdmink-lite

Surprisingly enough this is the second year in a row I’ve drawn something for Mink’s birthday; usually I’ll only draw character birthday pictures once, if at all. Mink (and Aoba) helped me get through an emotionally stressful time in my life, so I guess I drew this to show my gratitude.

Special thanks to my mom for sending me a photo of that viewpoint that I could use for a background.

Sorry for the long stretch of time with no updates; it’s been an interesting few months.

Lately I’ve been playing a rhythm game app called Idolish7, where you play the manager of a seven-man boyband. The main boys are alright, but their rival boyband is much cooler, so I decided to draw them. This was originally drawn on a thin strip of scrap paper, hence the odd crop.

  • Raiden Rising

    rairai

Another Metal Gear study piece of sorts. After a friend introduced me to the Metal Gear Rising soundtrack I felt like drawing Raiden (but from MGS2, because I don’t really like MGR Raiden’s design). I also tried out some new ink brushes together with the ones I’ve been using.

I wanted to draw these two again, and I wanted to draw something summery. It all worked out

  • PKMN: With Love From Slateport City

    daiharubeach

I spent the holiday weekend on the water at one of Washington’s state parks. I found a lot of shells there, but couldn’t take any of them home with me, so I decided to draw a few (then I added a few I didn’t see, like the cowry shells and starfish). I also added some items from Pokemon that might be found on a beach. Needless to say, coloring this took quite a bit longer than I’d bargained for.

  • ain’t we just

    bigdamnheroes

I beat Mass Effect 2 with 0 casualties, which is pretty impressive considering how easy it is to get your team killed in the last mission. (I actually got two of my favorites killed, reloaded my last save in frustration, and got everyone out alive on the second try). The final boss of that game is a larger-than-life mechanical monster, and taking it down with my Very Large Sniper Rifle felt really good after 2 hours of trying-not-to-kill-my-guys panic. It felt like we really had saved the galaxy, somehow. So I decided to channel that immense satisfaction into this.

I realized while drawing that two members of my usual three-man party look pretty doofy in human sunglasses

Recently I’ve been playing my way through the Mass Effect series, and I’m really enjoying it! The universe is so rich and the characters are all incredible; it’s a game I highly recommend (even though I haven’t finished ME2 yet). I’ve drawn quite a bit of art for it but I think this is the most polished Mass Effect piece I’ve done so far.

I’ve wanted to draw a picture like this with Garrus and my Shepard for a while now, but I was too chicken to draw the armor and scifi guns (I’ve drawn Garrus in casual clothes several times before, so his alien face doesn’t intimidate me anymore). A couple days ago I remembered the wise words of Shia LaBeouf and decided to just do it.
